The Department of Anesthesiology is a large and varied academic department dedicated to carrying out the mission of Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson University Hospital, and the Jefferson Health Care Network. The Department sponsors a fully accredited residency training program, fellowship programs, as well as educational programs for medical students. Two nationally recognized CME programs are offered each year as well.

- Implement evidence-based techniques to improve imaging and patient safety for vascular access and peripheral nerve blocks
- Assess and differentiate the risks and benefits of different airway management techniques in emergency situations
- Integrate a focused study of medical history and airway physical examination into patient care
- Apply appropriate techniques for the management of elevated intracranial pressure and assess the efficacy of various neuro-protective methodologies
- Describe the role of the anesthesiologists in applying neuromonitoring theories in neurological surgery
- Demonstrate improved efficiencies in the operating room
- Develop an efficient communication system to coordinate the efforts of the anesthesia team
- Define the deleterious effect of RBC transfusion and determine when to type and screen or type and cross
- Assess the risks of using anticoagulants and neuraxial anesthesia when treating obese patients and the proper use of ultrasound when administering
- Apply new up to date techniques in the placement of peripheral, single injection and continuous blocks including the use of ultrasound
- Integrate techniques used for safely administering anesthesia to neonates during neonatal emergencies
- Identify how to avoid malpractice lawsuits and properly prepare litigation
- Describe instances of fraudulent research and publishing and the difference between fair use and plagiarism
- Apply the Joint Commission USP 797 standards relating to drug and infusion preparation in regional anesthesia
- Develop treatment strategies that employ multimodal pain management and integrate emerging analgesia techniques
