Clinical Care Plan: An Interprofessional Course at Jefferson

Decrease Font SizeIncrease Font Size

In the spring of 2009, a revised interprofessional course was developed by Marcia Levinson, PT, PhD, MFT; Amy Miller, PharmD, BCPS; Kathryn Shaffer, RN, MSN; and Nethra Ankam, MD, entitled Clinical Care Plan: Interprofessional Course (CCPIC). CCPIC is an expansion of a course, ID402, initially developed for physical therapy and occupational therapy students.

The first session of the new course ran from February 2nd until February 20th, the second from March 9th to the 20th, and the third from March 30th to April 24th. Enrolled in this course are medical, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing students. Pharmacy students will join in future semesters.

CCPIC is a 3-session program in which students learn to apply skills and work as interprofessional teams to create a Care Plan for a hypothetical patient. The Care Plan takes into account the patient's social, family, psychological and physical environments, in addition to health needs both from the present and future perspectives, and also prevention. This approach allows participants to “live the experience” of an interprofessional team and work toward shared patient goals.

In the first week of the course, students work on a series of three online modules covering group process, delivery of service and interprofessional teams, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Model of Health and Wellness. These modules facilitate the students' ability to collaborate using shared terminology and concepts. In their second session, students go over a sample case and are then divided into four groups, each assigned a unique case. At the third and last session, each team presents its Care Plan to a clinical panel of community healthcare providers. These clinicians discuss the case and plan with the students and provide feedback.

Following the end of the course, students submit reflection papers on their experiences. Several students commented that they appreciated the chance to be reviewed by a clinical panel, valued working as a team, and felt they gained a greater understanding of other's professional roles.
