Medicare Coverage Analysis for Clinical Trials

    This class will review how to ensure industry initiated clinical trials are properly budgeted and how this fits in with the ORA Contract process. In consultation with the PI and Study Coordinator, ORA saves the study staff valuable time by drafting and negotiating clinical trial budgets. ORA has implemented a standardized method for developing and negotiating industry initiated clinical trial budgets that is used by contract offices at many leading academic research institutions across the country.

    This session will focus on how participation in NIH study sections can strengthen the career of junior and mid-level faculty members. The panelists will discuss the qualities of a successful reviewer, including scientific rigor, balanced critiquing (distinguishing between serious flaws in the research and issues that can be improved or tolerated), fairness, communication skills (both in the written comments and in interactions with other reviewers), and professionalism. More practical issues, such as the required time commitment and the impact on one's own career trajectory, will also be discussed. Finally, the panelists will draw from their own experiences to outline different ways that a Jefferson researcher may become involved in NIH study section activities.

    Federal regulations mandate that research involving human subjects have IRB approval prior to study initiation. In order to be a successful clinical researcher, investigators need to be familiar with the IRB process as well as with the regulatory framework within which we all must operate.     Health services research (HSR) is the multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately our health and well-being.

    Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) helps people and their caregivers communicate and make informed health care decisions, allowing their voices to be heard in assessing the value of health care options.

    HSR and PCOR share a number of methods and can be used to assess the impact of delivery system interventions. This workshop will introduce faculty members to these types of research using examples from the instructors’ research portfolio. The discussion will focus on the suggested course of training in order to develop a successful research career, provide examples of successful grant applications, and offer guidance on how to navigate early career development.

    At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

    1) Describe the history of health services research and patient centered outcomes research
    2) Identify specific examples of HSR and PCOR
    3) Create a community of researchers at Jeff committed to HSR and PCOR

This workshop provides an introduction to academic publishing by exploring the metrics and tools used to determine “impact.” Facilitators will explore the concept of “high impact” publishing, discuss two tools for assessing a journals impact factor, and discuss the evolution of academic publishing, including predatory publishing practices and open access journals.

    Survey fatigue is a threat to survey validity. To alleviate this issue, the Office of Institutional Research has implemented a survey policy for TJU. This workshop will teach the attendees how to submit student survey proposals and create valid surveys. We will discuss question bias: how word choice can influence respondents’ answers. We will identify bias and develop ways to avoid using bias in survey questions. Additionally, we will discuss how to determine which type of question format is most applicable for the information needed. Finally, participants will learn some basic features of Survey Monkey to create professional-looking surveys.

    At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

    Many writers feel anxiety about handing their manuscripts over to a judge, even if it’s just a peer. However, having someone else proofread and give a manuscript feedback increases the chance that it will get published. In our collaborative world, good peer editors should know how to respect the writer, build trust, and fix some errors. This session helps improve communication between the peer editor and the writer by defining inoffensive ways to give feedback. It also shares specific proofreading strategies for finding errors.

    Qualitative data collection methods vary widely but frequently involve interviews, observations, or focus groups. Less common, but more interactive and creative approaches, such as intercept interviews, free-listing, walking interviews, photo elicitation interviews, photovoice, and nominal group technique can enhance a researcher's ability to collaborate with stakeholders, patients and communities and create lasting and effective partnerships. Each approach presents unique implementation, recruitment, and ethical challenges, which will be discussed in this presentation. We will address data collection, organization, and analysis, including effective ways to disseminate findings. Additionally, we will workshop effective basic interview techniques which can be translated to a variety of data collection approaches.

    Medical educators invest significant time and effort into developing and writing educational innovations and research manuscripts. For many, the interval between hitting “submit” and receiving a decision letter can be an anxiety-provoking and uncertain time. In this session, I provide a behind-the-scenes look at what happens to manuscripts at each stage of the review and decision process. Participants will follow the journey of a manuscript through the editorial screening process, reviewer and editor selection, review processing and grading, and decision formulations. I will also discuss the main reasons manuscripts get rejected and will detail three principles for navigating the peer-review process, including how to effectively respond to reviewer comments. Participants will have an opportunity to analyze challenging reviewer critiques and will discuss, in small groups, several strategies for responding to reviewers.

    2) Recognize the screening process and how reviewers are selected and “graded.”
    3) tate several reasons why medical education manuscripts get rejected.
    4) Describe three principles for navigating the peer-review process
    5) Analyze and respond to challenging reviewer critiques.

    * Dr. Anthony R. Artino, Jr. is a tenured professor and Interim Associate Dean for Evaluation and Educational Research at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). He received his PhD in educational psychology from the University of Connecticut and served 23 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as Captain in 2020. In his current role, he leads evaluation and educational research efforts for SMHS, teaches graduate courses, and mentors students and junior faculty. As a researcher, he has been the principal or associate investigator on two dozen funded research projects totaling more than $32 million. Dr. Artino is a deputy editor for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, an assistant editor for Academic Medicine, and an associate editor for Perspectives on Medical Education. He is also a Fellow of the Association for Medical Education in Europe. Dr. Artino has published 200 scientific articles and book chapters and has conducted 150 invited talks, research presentations, and conference workshops on learning and assessment for international audiences around the globe.
