Q: Is KM a candidate for diabetes screening?

A: The American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines2 recommend screening patients older than 40 who have risk factors (see Table 2). The ADA also recommends that it may be appropriate to screen all individuals over the age of 40 even in the absence of additional risk factors for diabetes. I follow this policy and screen all adults over the age of 40 and younger individuals with risk factors such as a positive family history or characteristics of the metabolic syndrome. Any findings of overweight and physical inactivity may cause me to lower my screening age to 30 years.
