1961: Women Storm the Gates of JMC (Or, A Tale for Women’s History Month)

Women's history

Cartoon from Punch (British) magazine, 1872.

In 2011 Jefferson celebrates 50 years since the admission of the first female medical students.  It was in the fall of 1961 that the first women applicants to be accepted to Jefferson Medical College matriculated.

Special Collections Librarian and University Archivist Michael Angelo has written an article about this aspect of Jefferson history.

Of course, women have been training as nurses at Jefferson since 1891, and we highlight their history, as well.

You can celebrate Women’s History Month, too, by picking up one of the readings recommended by Library staff.

I never really gave it much thought until I looked at this cartoon… The bustle really gave women the “frail elderly” look no matter what their age.
