JMC Student Council: Meeting Minutes

OCTOBER 13, 1999

I. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

  1. Study Space
    1. Bluemle Life Sciences Building: JMC Students are permitted to study on the tables in the hallway on each floor. Students are permitted to study in Rooms 101, 105, 107 ONLY on the weekends. Only a student ID is required.
    2. Jefferson Alumni Hall: The Dean’s Office reports that the lighting in the JAH cafeteria area will be improved by January.
    3. Students are reminded and strongly encouraged to keep all study areas clean and tidy. If students move tables and/or chairs, please return to their original set-up. If these guidelines are not followed, the JMC student study privileges will be revoked.
  1. Nominations for the 2000-2001 Student Council Executive Board will be taken starting at the November Meeting and until Monday, December 6th. 2nd and 3rd years are eligible for all executive board positions (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary). 1st years are only eligible for the positions of Treasurer and Secretary.
  2. Class of 2003: The current Student Handbook is available at the Registrar’s Office. It is also available in its entirety on the internet on the Jeffline Home Page.

II. DEAN’S REPORT: Dean Pohl

  1. The construction of the new building on Scott Plaza is scheduled to begin in March. This project should last approximately 2 and ½ years.
  2. Dean’s Letters for the Class of 2000: necessary corrections are currently being made. The letters will be mailed out on November 1st.
  3. More information on the USMLE Step 1 will be compiled once all of the results come in.

III. COMMITTEE REPORTS

  1. 1) ADMISSIONS:
  • 217 students graduated as the class of 1999. 84% matched in their top 3 choices – this is an all-time high for Jefferson. Family Medicine took the most number of graduates.
  • The current 1st year class had 8171 applicants, 765 were interviewed, and 223 matriculated.
  • Early Decision Admission Letter for the Class of 2004 were sent out on October 1. Of 63 early decision candidates, approximately 50% were accepted.
  • Currently, Jefferson has 6742 applications which is up 2-3% from last year.
  • For 1st time in history, Jefferson will be conducting off-campus interviews. Led by Dean Christian, interviews for under-privileged students will be conducted at Southern Illinois University.

2) AFFILIATIONS:

  • Currently working on "The Insider’s Guide to Rotations," and "The Official Guide to 3rd Year."

3) ALUMNI:

  • Sophomore Career Day will be December 1, 1999 from 4pm-7pm. There will be a hoagie dinner at 7pm.

4) ANIMAL RESOURCES: No report

5) CURRICULUM:

  • One of the Curriculum sub-committees is the Task Force for Curriculum Review. This task force will include 2 student representatives.

6) STUDENT AFFAIRS:

  • The student affairs committee is currently focused on improving the Faculty-Advisor Program. This effort will be spearheaded by Dr. Horn who is in the process of contacting the 60+ current advisors to obtain faculty feedback and ideas.

7) TECHNOLOGY: No report

IV. CLASS REPORTS

1) Class of 2000:

4th years are currently beginning residency interviews! At the Class Banquet, 4th years were fitted for graduation caps and gowns, and voted for a faculty member for the Class Portrait.

2) Class of 2001: in 3rd block

3) Class of 2002: exams are over (for now)

4) Class of 2003: The new elected representatives: Andy Burchard, Duane Duke, Reena Gupta, Clinton Keilman, Miriam Post, Winston Shu,

V. OLD BUSINESS

  • Due to the lack of student use, there is no longer a Photocopier on the 3rd floor of JAH outside of the computer lab

VI. NEW BUSINESS

  1. The 1999-2000 Student Organization Leadership Guide will be available in the Student Affairs Office by the end of the month. 1 Representative from each student organization will be required to sign for 1 copy for the group.

  2. Two new student organizations have been approved
    1. The Daedalus Health Society: a forum for creative expression in the form of writing, painting, etc.

    3. Clowns for Medicine Society: a group dedicated to spreading happiness and joy to patients on hospital floors. Contact Ken Remy (Kenneth.Remy@jefferson.edu) for more information.
