JMC Student Council: Meeting Minutes

October 8, 2003

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORTS

President (Chan Park): excused

Vice-President (Stephen Tai):
-welcomed newly elected 1st year reps: Mimi Raleigh, Runa Hatti, Swetha Srinivasan, Mark Mandicheck

Treasurer (Margaret Johnson):
-no new business

Secretary (Ami Kapadia): Welcomed 1st years.
-no new business


DEAN'S REPORT (Dr. Lopez)

Career counseling sessions:

  • for 1st/2nd years: 3 formal sessions will be held
  • for 3rd years: 1 formal session
  • for 4th years: specific sessions related to residency/match
  • tentatively scheduled all-class party for Nov. 14th

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE (Chris Jones):
-6421 applications (compared to 6392 previous year)
-5 early decision applicants accepted so far

AFFILIATIONS COMMITTEE (Alex Lee, Kris Lyon):
-no new business

ALUMNI COMMITTEE (Peter Fleischut, Carson Campe):
-Career day will be on Wed. Dec 3rd
-representatives from various specialties to talk to

RESEARCH COMMITTEE (Cathy Davies):
-met with upper class reps and with Dr. Lopez
-trying to continue lecture series: speakers from competitive residencies to discuss what it takes to match in these areas

CURRICULUM COMMITTEE (Matt Prowler, Ed McCann):
-course review for FCM: 50-70% attendance
-small groups rated as good for learning
-comments for improvement: syllabus and staying within 50 min. time limit per lecture
-trying to decrease lecture time by 10%
-mean for exams was 84-85%
-trying to improve syllabus
-new 4th year elective: coronary care
-will be offered
-post-exam review proposal accepted: all clerkships must allow time for student review of exams
-Chris Coletti is new student co-chair for curriculum task force

STUDENT AFFAIRS (Koel Guha, Jamie Koprivunikar):
-2 new clubs approved: Outing Club and Jefferson Ambassadors
-still working on changing email system back to previous system

TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE (Lea Sullivan, Kevin Turner, Keith Mathers):
-setting up Q & A for 2nd year class: all students can make up own questions based on syllabus > available to whole class
-can't send attachments to whole class through Pulse > so, they are setting up new site to send attachments to, and everyone can access attachments from this site (in progress)


CLASS REPORTS

Class of 2004:
-involved in application process currently, preparing for residency interviews. Early match students getting responses
-Oct. 20th > measured for caps/gowns and senior portraits
-Oct. 22nd-practice interviewing seminar
-if anyone has an old computer they would like to donate to JeffHope for Kids > contact Kelly McGuigan

Class of 2005:
-middle of 3rd block

Class of 2006:
-had exam on Fri. Oct. 3rd
-addressing complaints about library: too much talking, conversation. Need to go in stairwell to answer cell phones, don't answer in study area b/c this disturbs other students. Avoid conversations in study area.

Class of 2007:
-newly elected reps introduced themselves

TASK FORCES

SAFETY TASK FORCE
-none present

NEW BUSINESS

  1. Mary Bove and Ami Kapadia: requested funding for P.A.P.A./Malpractice talk sponsored by Public Health Society and AMSA

  2. Kelly McGuigan: requested funding for Dermatology society > speakers and meetings

  3. Jennifer Pelli-requested funding for AMWA

  4. Chris Jones-requested funding for Geriatrics Society for lecture series

  5. Kelly McGuigan-requested funding to support travel to conference to present research.

  6. Outing Club-requested funding.
