President (Anita Mehrotra)
Please use Pulse if you are e-mailing your class. If you need

Vice-President (Seth Hollander)
- Welcome to the new representatives for the Class of 2003:
Jake Rofman, Matt Eichenbaum, Erin Osterman, Justin Chandler,
and Ray Conway.
- We have received 12 applications for the Curriculum Committee,
10 for Admissions, 3 for Technology, 3 for Alumni, 2 for research,
and 1 for Student Affairs.
- The representatives of the Class of 2005 will be running preliminary
interviews for the Admissions Committee.
- Applicants who are not accepted will be asked if they would
like to apply for the Student Affairs Committee.
- If anyone has input on student attitudes, contact Seth.
Treasurer (Sheila Barbarino)
- The finance office has 3 months to give you a refund check.
Sheila submits the request as soon as she receives them. They
only write the checks twice a month, so if you have submitted
a request 3 months ago, and still haven't received a reimbursement,
contact Sheila.
- The budget is now complete, and is being reviewed by others
at student council. There have been some computer problems that
have been slowing down the process.
- We will now have a treasury box in Student Affairs for comments
instead of e-mail. Suggestions should be placed there.
Secretary (Paul Johnson) had no new business.
DR. DeSIMONE -- Student Affairs Report
- Two weeks ago, residents of Barringer and Orlowitz received
a letter from Housing informing them that some tenants might
be forced to relocate due to upcoming renovations.
- Since then, there have been some changes. An outside corporation
is taking over Housing. This is not unusual for medical schools.
- They have scaled back on how many floors they will be renovating.
- These renovations are necessary because of the current fire
codes.
- It will take place after the 2nd years have completed their
exams.
- Affected residents will have the option to relocate within
campus housing.
- After the renovations are complete, they will have the option
to stay or to move back into their newly renovated apartment
at a higher rate.
- The Victory Building will hopefully be ready with 60 new
apartments by spring 2003.
- Residents can break their lease early without any problems.
- Jefferson will pay for moving expenses.

year.

- They are no longer the Animal Resources Committee.
- They want to implement a group setting where students can
discuss research projects.
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
- The course review for Infection, Immunity, and Disease was
discussed at the March 19 Curriculum Committee meeting.
- From Dr. Abraham's perspective, this was the "best-taught¨
year for this course.
- Integration with the relevant pharmacology and the infectious
disease section of ICM vastly improved the presentation of course
content.
- The clinical correlations and lab were also very well-done.
- The positive outweighed the negative.
- Students were concerned about the first section during which
included Immunology and Virology.
- The presentation of these topics concurrently was found to
be difficult/confusing by 66% of the class.
- Place for next year include improvement by replacing consistently
poor lecturers.
- The timing/sequencing of Immunology and Virology is also
being discussed by the faculty.
- The advantages and challenges of cumulative examinations
were discussed.
- Only 4% of students favored cumulative exams.
- Regarding the new 4th year elective Orthopedic Surgery at
Einstein students will rotate through the 4 services of the
department, giving them the opportunity to experience most aspects
of general orthopedics as well as subspecialty areas.
- For Jefferson students to receive elective credit, a 4-week
rotation is required.
- Regarding clinical skills teaching, Dr. Mangione spoke about
rekindling educational emphasis on the teaching of "bedside"
skills.
- Jefferson's recent effort began with the work of the Clinical
Skills Task Force, which drafted a 4-year interdisciplinary
curriculum.
- Properly trained faculty, adequate curriculum time, a clinical
skills center, and a standardized patient (SP) teaching and
evaluation program are some of the resources needed.
- The temporary Clinical Skills Center opened in January in
the Sheridan Building and Harvey, a very sophisticated electronic
mannequin, has been purchased.
- It will be used to teach and test knowledge and skills for
all 4 years.
- A discussion followed regarding 1st year courses including
DHI, Anatomy, Physiology, and Neuroscience.
- Reorganization to 2nd year, including Physical Diagnosis
has begun with the increase in lecture hours and "physical
diagnosis rounds" as part of DIS this year.
- Planning for next year will focus on coordinating the teaching
of clinical skills with ICM.
- The quality of the teachers dedicated to teaching clinical
skills is a critical factor.
- Variability in teaching effectiveness and time factors were
also noted by student members.
- The teaching of clinical skills is also getting increased
emphasis in the 3rd year.
- A high-stakes end-of-year 3rd year clinical skills assessment
is planned; assessments at the end of both the 1st and 2nd year
are in discussion as well.
- The LCME visit took place April 15-18.
- Issues brought up by the Year 1 Task Force include options
for integration between basic and clinical sciences and between
basic science courses.
- Subcommittees have been formed to (a) review curriculum and
innovate teaching methods at other medical schools that may
have value at Jefferson and (b) review the teaching of Genetics.
- The Year 2 Steering Committee focused on Physical Diagnosis.
- There was good feedback and positive comments about Module
7 (Nervous System, Psychiatry, and Ophthalmology).
STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
- A major goal is the alleviation of scheduling problems.
- One idea is to model after the system used by Penn.
- An issue with this is the fact that our community is smaller
than Penn's.
- For now, go through the registrar if you want to schedule
anything.

- Visit the LRC to have them burn you a copy.
- 10 laptops are available in the library.

works for Pathology, Histology, and Anatomy.
- If you're having problems with e-mail, send an e-mail to
postmaster@jefferson.edu and ask for the ticket #.
- Leave your phone # in the e-mail so they can contact you.
- Palm Pilots will be coming out within 3 or 4 weeks.
- We might be able to get them for less than the going rate.
CLASS OF 2003
- They're on rotations and will be signing up for Step 2 of
the boards in the near future.
- The Clinical Skills Assessment is mandatory, but you don't
have to pass.
- This exam has stirred up controversy since it requires students
to miss a day of rotations.
- The test will be given between May 15 and August 31.
