EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORTS
President: (Brad Klein)
- Clinical skills program is going to be expanded for 1st and
2nd years and a clinical skills building is being looked into.
- The second year curriculum is being switched to a more organ
based approach with a decreases overall content.
- Fourth year curriculum will see changes in IDEPTs and an
increase in elective time.
- Facilities: JMC social lounge is almost complete; planning
of new clinical skills building, a computer testing center,
more study space and new auditoriums are being looked into.
- Student Affairs Office: Dr. Christian has moved to the head
of the Multiculturism and Diversity Department. Dr. Glazier
has moved to the Academic Affairs Office in the College Building.
Dr. Lopez and Dr. DeSimone are the new members of the Office
of Student Affairs. Dr. Pohl has remained and will head up the
Office of Student Affairs.
Vice President (Andy Burchard)
- 1st year elections will take place after their exam on Friday,
Oct 19th.
- Nomination forms for 1st year elections are due by 5:00 the
Wednesday before elections. One must obtain 25 signatures on
a piece of paper to be turned into the Office of Student Affairs
where Andy Burchard maintains a mailbox.
- The next Student Council Meeting (Nov 14th) nominations for
executive council will begin.
Treasurer (Lisa Collea)
- The office of Treasurer has the responsibilities of book
keeping and the handling of all Student Council funds.
Secretary (Luke Austin)
- The Office of the Secretary is responsible for attendance.
The second job of the office is to write up these wonderful
minutes and thus provide the student body with valuable reading
material.
DEAN'S REPORT (Dr. Lopez)
- Dr. Lopez began by saying the administration is fully committed
to improving JMC for its students.
- The clinical skills Lab is a project that will happen.
- There is a brochure outlining study space throughout Jefferson
that can be picked up at the Office of Student Affairs.
- The new student lounge at JAH is a lounge first and a study
space second.
- Personal Counseling:
- The Office of Student Affairs is still handling some counseling.
Feel free to speak with a dean.
- However, a new office, the Personal Counseling Center directed
by Dr. Youakim, has been developed to handle counseling. He
can be reached at 833 Chestnut, 215-928-3033.
- The results from Step1 Boards are not in.
- The results from Step 2 Boards are as follows: National Mean
215, Jefferson Mean 213.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
a) Admissions:
- Offers have been given to people between the ages of 19-43
from 32 different states.
- 438 offers given, a 3% decrease from last year.
- 7200 total applications, 9% decrease. Applications are down
nationally.
- 47% matriculation female
- 12 minority, up 33%
- Average scores: 3.45 science GPA, 3.53 non-science GPA, 9.7
verbal, 10 physical, and 10.1 biological sciences.
b) Affiliations:
- Jefferson now affiliates with two new hospitals.
- Committee is working on putting an affiliations guide on the
web.
c) Alumni:
- December 5th and 6th is career day.
- Parent's day is coming in March.
d) Medical Student Research and Animal Resources Committee:
- The committee most in need of an acronym. Well, Elliott and
Joey, I suppose there is no need to write a mission statement
for your committee.
- They will be taking on the responsibility of increasing awareness
of faculty-student research opportunities. There will be a meeting
about opportunities Wednesday, November 7th at 5:00 in Brent.
e) Curriculum:
- Harper and Erica are asking for the opinions of the 2nd years
on the new curriculum. From this second year, I think it is
great except for all the studying, tests, busy work and library
hours.
f) Student Affairs:
- Orientation was a weeklong event.
- The Squash club is now affiliated with the Activities Office.
Leah, you always have to be doing things a little different
don't you.
- The Student Affairs Committee approved the local chapter
of the IFMSA.
- The Library will have wireless Internet connection by November.
g) Technology:
- Note service is on-line.
- A new palm computer support page is now in Jeffline under
the title support.
CLASS REPORTS
Class of 2002
- USMLE step II is underway and almost complete.
- Applications for residency.
- Planning of senior week. They say that there will be changes
due to poor attendance in previous years.
- Match Day is March 21st. The party is being planned and all
are invited.
- Senior Portrait selection is Oct 23rd.
Class of 2003
- They are in their 3rd rotation and glad to be done with 2nd
year.
Class of 2004
- There was a good turn out for post exam.
- The new curriculum has been proceeding smoothly up to this
point.
- What is up with the DIS class?
NEW BUSINESS
- The Jefferson Health and Politics Society petitioned for student
organizational status. The society's focus is to teach members
how to start grass root movements and the politics of getting
an idea
off the ground. The student council vote passed and the JHPS is
an official organization.
- IFMSA petitioned for student organizational status. IFMSA is
involved in an international medical student exchange program
and busies itself with helping foreign student come to Philadelphia.
I think. The Student Council approved this organization.
- There is a "Save the Children" fundraiser going on
to help the children affected by the Sept 11th attack. The collection
box is in the Student Affairs Office on the first floor of JAH.
