Jefferson Boricua Latino Health Organization Latin Heritage Month Events Mixer & Dinner

The Jefferson Boricua Latino Health Organization (JBLHO), a chapter of the National Boricua Latino Health Organization (NBLHO), is a student group whose mission is to:

  • educate the Jefferson community about Latino health issues;
  • promote awareness about social, political, and economic issues as they relate to Latino health;
  • serve to create a support network for Latino students; and
  • recruit Latinos into higher education.

Activities

Some of the activities for 2009-2010, in cooperation with the Office of Diversity and Minority Affairs (ODAMA), include:

Weekly Medical Spanish Course

Learn medical terminology, discuss Latino health care issues, learn how to perform a physical in this free course offered at Jefferson.

Jefferson Medical Language Immersion Program (JEFF MED-LIP)

Participate in a summer abroad "immersion" program where Medical Spanish is reinforced, clinical rotations are emphasized, and healthcare issues specific to that location are addressed. The program is a 6-8 week clinical internship in the Dominican Republic in collaboration with the Universidad Iberoamericana School of Medicine (UNIBE).

Latino Heritage Month

September 15 - October 15, 2009 is Latino Heritage Month. JBLHO organizes an array of interesting and fun events that help educate the Jefferson community about Latinos and the health issues that affect them. See the sidebar for individual events.

2010 NBLHO Annual Conference

To be held January 29-30, 2010 Yale University SOM New Haven, Connecticut

Research Opportunities

The Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program supports advanced students at NIH-funded programs in South American, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. Application deadline: December 3, 2009.
