Copyright and Use

When requested, libraries and archives can provide a photocopy or other form of reproduction for items located within their collections as authorized by the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code). Such reproductions may only be used for the purpose of private study, scholarship, or research, i.e., "fair use."

If the recipient later uses a reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. In addition, these reproductions may not be made for, or donated to, other repositories or further reproduced without written permission from the TJU Archives and Special Collections

Any images located on pages that are part of the JEFFLINE Web site may be used for the purpose of private study, scholarship, or research, i.e., "fair use." For these purposes only, you may print and make photocopies or download materials from the Website on the condition you provide proper attribution of the source of these copies.

For use of images from the Web site in print publications, broadcast, or commercial products, you must contact the TJU Archives and Special Collections in advance and follow the procedures listed under the "Publication Policy" below.

Publication Policy

Thomas Jefferson University claims mainly physical ownership of its University Archives and Special Collections materials, both published and unpublished, image or manuscript. While the University is willing to provide any available information about the copyright holder (when known), persons wishing to publish materials must assume all responsibility for identifying and satisfying any claimants of copyright

A fee of $50.00, per image, is assessed for the one-time publication use of a photographic or digital image of materials to which the University has reproduction rights (the publication fee does not pertain to reproductions used for official University purposes).

Permission to reproduce and/or publish, when granted, is for a one-time use of the material. "One-time use" is defined as use in a single production or publication. Later or different use including subsequent editions, reprints, or any other reproduction by photographic or electronic means constitutes reuse. Permission must be separately negotiated for reuse and may require additional fees.

The publication fee is in addition to the fees charged to reproduce the item as outlined in the Reproduction Price List. While no publication fee is charged for the use of materials in a presentation, lecture, or exhibit, fees for reproduction of the item do apply. Photographic or digital images from the University Archives and Special Collections may not be reproduced in any cropped, distorted, or altered form.

How to Cite Materials from the Archives and Special Collection

All reproductions must be accompanied by ownership credit as well as the correct citation, including

• a description of the item
• title and accession number of the photograph
• or title and MS number for the collection
