Northern
and Southern editions of Samuel D. Gross's Manual of Military
Surgery.

The book became a
standard field manual for Civil War surgeons -- even in the Confederate
Army. It is interesting to note that the version published for the
Confederacy was an unauthorized copy of the book by a Richmond printer.
The illustration
above shows both the Northern and Southern editions.
