Manual of Military Surgery

In the background of the tableau image on the opening page of this exhibit lies an enlarged reproduction of the title page of Dr. Samuel D. Gross's Manual of Military Surgery; or, Hints on the Emergencies of Field, Camp and Hospital (Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1862).

Northern and Southern Editions of Gross's Manual of Military Surgery

Northern and Southern editions of Samuel D. Gross's Manual of Military Surgery.

The book became a standard field manual for Civil War surgeons -- even in the Confederate Army. It is interesting to note that the version published for the Confederacy was an unauthorized copy of the book by a Richmond printer.

The illustration above shows both the Northern and Southern editions.
