JEFFSelects: Community & Public Health

International Organizations

  • Global Forum for Health Research
An affiliated organization of the World Health Organization, its function is to address the 10/90 gap: only 10% of public and private health research money worldwide is being used to address 90% of the world’s health issues. The Forum partners with the public and private sectors to help with the reallocation of funding to address international public health needs, especially for under-developed countries.

  • International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
Also commonly known as the International Red Cross, this is the world’s largest humanitarian relief organization. The national societies that comprise this organization, such as the American Red Cross, provide emergency disaster relief, community-based health care and training, blood donor recruitment, disease prevention and management, and many other functions of public health. Many of their publications are available, in whole or in part, on this site.

  • Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
PAHO is the regional office for the World Health Organization. It provides health data and information about the countries of the Western Hemisphere. The site is also a news resource for Pan American public health issues. A Spanish language version is available.

  • World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA)
This 64 member international organization of national public health associations or societies provides a list of member organizations and links to their Web sites (if available). This site is maintained as part of the APHA Web site.

  • World Health Organization (WHO)
The WHO is the public health arm of the United Nations. Its mission is to improve the overall health of the world’s population. International health statistics, international traveler’s health warnings, disease outbreak and disaster notices, and much more can be found here. French and Spanish language versions of the site are available.
