Organizations, Associations & Professional Societies

  • Alternative Medicine Foundation, Inc.
    Providers of HerbMed, the Foundation provides information for both practitioners and consumers, sponsors research and projects, and organizes conferences and educational programs.
  • American Botanical Council (HerbalGram)
    The ABC is an educational organization whose stated goals are "to educate the public about beneficial herbs and plants and to promote the safe and effective use of medicinal plants." Their site includes sample information from their publications, but the full publications are only available for a fee.
  • American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP)
    Information for the practitioner includes education opportunities, state licensing, research & speaking opportunities. Health promotional information and physician referrals are freely available for consumers, as well as literature for sale.
  • American Society of Pharmacognosy (PHCOG)
    A professional organization for scientists and practitioners interested in the properties of drugs of natural origin, and the search for new drugs from natural sources.
  • Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB)
    The Association is a professional organization, originally founded in 1968 as the Biofeedback Research Society. Much of the site is limited to members only, but free areas give background about biofeedback and upcoming educational opportunities.
  • Herb Research Foundation (HRF)
    The Foundation serves as a publishing house for herbal information, and solicits individual memberships as well as selling publications. Full text of recent scientific news related to herbs is free, along with selected longer works called "green papers."
  • National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)
    The mission of the NCCAOM is to "promote nationally recognized standards of competency and safety in acupuncture, Chinese herbology and Oriental bodywork therapy for the purpose of protecting the public." NCCAOM accredits the educational programs which certify practitioners in these fields.
  • National Health Council (NHC)
    The NHC is an organization of organizations, representing all segments of the healthcare industry. It sponsors research, organizes educational programs, and publishes information for both the consumer and practitioner. The Council promotes the voluntary health movement and supports healthcare advocacy.
  • Society for Medicinal Plant Research
    This professional society organizes scientific meetings, sponsors research, and publishes the journal "Planta Medica."
  • Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBMWeb)
    SBM is a professional society, founded in 1978 to promote an interdisciplinary approach to behavioral medicine.
