Grants.gov - The "new" Federal grants "find & apply" portal for electronic grants application submissions
The NIH is transitioning to online electronic grants application submissions through grants.gov.   NIH RO1 applications must be completed electronically through grants.gov effective February 5, 2007.  All government grants will be converted to the electronic process by 2008.  Thus any government grant (no matter what agency)  will eventually be listed on grants.gov.  Until all agencies are converted, some may still require a paper submission.  Depending on the agency, look for your grant on grants.gov and follow the appropriate directions (paper or electronic).  The process works in conjunction with eRA Commons, the NIH electronic Research Administration system that allows applicants/grantees to electronically receive and transmit application and award information and see the status of their applications.  The eRA Commons is also a virtual meeting place where NIH extramural grantee organizations, grantees, and the public can receive and transmit information about the administration of biomedical and behavioral research. The eRA Commons is divided into both unrestricted and restricted portions that provide for public and confidential information, respectively.  Certain activity on the commons may be restricted to your PI, department head or Jefferson’s Office of Research Administration (ORA).

Email Alerts
Grants.gov also offers an email subscription service to receive notifications of new grant postings delivered right to your email. Be selective when you sign up for it! A full alert to all announcements through this system would result in over 600 email messages per month. Consider using the “Notices Based on Advanced Criteria” to target your results.

NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) – Also known as the “NIH Guide”
The OER guide is an official weekly publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities. The website offers another mechanism for searching for federal grant opportunities.  To cover all bases, we recommend you search both grants.gov and the OER website as results are not always consistent between the two sites.  Be sure to use the Advanced Search page to apply all pertinent criteria for your search.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (GSA)
This comprehensive government-wide catalog lists all domestic assistance programs. Browse by agency to familiarize yourself with agency structure or search by keyword. Because it is updated only twice a year, use current awareness services to learn about new opportunities.

FedBizOpps
The Federal government advertises its procurement opportunities worth over $25,000.

Federal Register
All government funding program announcements are published first in the Federal Register except for National Institutes of Health (NIH) opportunities and some Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) discretionary grant programs. The HRSA opportunities are announced in the HRSA Preview guide which is published in the Federal Register. NIH announcements appear in the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts. The Register includes notices, rules and proposed rules from federal agencies from 1995 to present, including announcements of grant opportunities. It can be searched by section, date and keyword, and is updated every working day. Sign up for the daily Table of Contents email alert.

Individual Federal agencies maintain their own databases of funding opportunities and funded research, and email notification services.

HHS GrantsNet
Funding opportunities available from the Health and Human Services agency. See also their general advice page on grants from the agency.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

NIH provides the majority of Jefferson's federal funding.

Funded Research: CRISP (Computerized Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects), a searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions. Includes projects funded by the NIH and other Dept. of Health & Human Services agencies (e.g. CDC, AHRQ, FDA, HRSA), 1985-present, updated weekly.
Current Awareness: weekly NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts, a searchable database of NIH support from 1992 to present.
Special Support for New Investigators: Resources for New Investigators includes a statement of commitment to first-time investigators, plus policies, advice and links to special programs.

National Science Foundation Grants & Awards (NSF)

Funded Research: the NSF FastLane service offers various search points for a database of previous awards
Current Opportunities: NSF's Active Funding Opportunities page lists upcoming target dates and deadlines. In addition, each directorate and division page lists upcoming due dates for that organization.

CRIS: U.S. Department of Agriculture Current Research Information System for Funded Research
CRIS records 30,000 current or recently completed projects funded by the USDA, and human nutrition projects supported by any federal agency. It is the documentation and reporting system for ongoing and recently completed research projects in agriculture, food and nutrition, and forestry.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

Department of Education Grants and Contracts (DOE)
The Department of Education administers programs for the education of individuals with disabilities and of those who are illiterate, disadvantaged, gifted, or immigrants, or who have limited English proficiency.

GOLD: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Grants On-Line Database for Funded Research (AHRQ)
GOLD is a searchable database of grants funded by AHRQ. Currently contains grants funded in Fiscal Year (FY) 2001; will be expanded to include grants funded in FY 2000 and FY 2002.
