Blackboard Bulletin: Blogs, Wikis & Full-Text Searching

Jeff-IT has recently installed a set of tools from Learning Objects called Campus Pack. Campus Pack contains two social computing tools for your course called Journal LX (Blog Tool) and Teams LX (Wiki Tool), as well as Search LX, a full-text searching tool that allows you to search Pulse as a whole or to search within individual courses and organizations.

For those unfamiliar with social computing, a blog is an online journal (private or group) and a wiki is a dynamic, group-edited website. The blog and wiki tools allow the instructor to assign groups of students (or the class as a whole) to work together on a journal and/or website, and if desired, track their participation and add a grade to the gradebook.

Academic & Instructional Support & Resources (AISR) has created tutorials on blogs, wikis and searching to help get you started with these tools. Please visit the Pulse Support website to access these tutorials (or see the related links below), as well has other helpful Pulse Support resources.

You may have noticed that there are two additional tools listed on the Learning Objects website called Podcast LX and Expo LX. Podcast LX allows instructors to add Podcasts to their course, but the tool is still under development by Learning Objects, so Jeff-IT hasn't released it the Jefferson community as of the writing of this article. Expo LX lets users create their own individual blogs and wikis on the My Pulse page, but as of this time, it is only available to a select group of Jeffersonions. Keep an eye out for future announcements on Pulse regarding Podcast LX and Expo LX.
