Pulse Support: Searching There are two methods for searching within Pulse; via the My Pulse portal or within an individual course or organization. Search via My Pulse After logging into Pulse, you will see the Pulse Tools box in the upper-left corner. Within this box is the Search Pulse link (see image 1).
Click on the Search Pulse link to access the search page (see image 2). There are 3 key items available on this page; the search box, a pull-down menu to select what content to search, and the Search button.
By default, the search page will search all of Pulse. If you already know what area of Pulse you want to search in, you can click on the pull-down menu and select that course or organization. For example, if you want to learn about the dental insurance options at TJU, you can narrow your search to the Human Resources organization (see image 3). Keep in mind that the search function will only display results that you are authorized to access. For example, if you are not enrolled in a Pathology course and you do a search on Hemodynamic Disorders, there is a good chance that your search will not return any results.
After selecting the Human Resources organization as the area you want to search within, type dental insurance in the search box and then click the Search button. The search page will return results of the search (see image 4). Click on the links within the search results to view that section of Pulse. Also note in the image below the text at the top of your results that says Recent searches. You can return to the search page at any time during your session and rerun any of your previous searches by clicking the links shown here.
Search Within a Course or Organization When you access a course, the course links are on the left-hand side of the screen (see image 5). In this example, those links are set up as text links, but some courses may have them displayed as buttons. Image 5 shows the two ways to search within a course. The first way is via a link directly at the top-level menu. You will see in the example below the link that reads Search Course. This link needs to be added by the instructor (see instructions below). A search button is also in the Tools section of the course (see image 6). This is turned on by default.
To search within the course, you just need to click on one of those links above. The search page will look much like the search page available on the My Pulse page, except that the search will only look within the course you are currently in (see image 7). Also note the Recent searches link. You see that Pulse remembered the earlier dental insurance search.
For this search, lets enter pathology in the search box. After clicking the Search button, the results are returned (see image 8).
For Instructors and Course Leaders: Adding the Search Link to your Top-Level Menu The first step is to enter the Control Panel. Once you have entered the Control Panel, you need to click on the Manage Course Menu link. The Manage Course Menu link is in the Course Options box in the lower-left section of the Control Panel (see image 9).
You will notice that there are 4 types of links you can add to the course menu. You want to add a Tool Link (see image 10).
The resulting page allows you to select the type of tool you want to add and to enter a name for the link. The name you enter is what will display on the top-level menu of links. You need to click on the pull-down menu and select Learning Objects Search LX (see image 11).
After selecting Learning Objects Search LX and entering a name, such as Search Course, click on the Submit button. You have now added a search link to the bottom of your course menu (see image 12). You can adjust the order of the links using the pull-down menus next to each link.
