Specific Types of Material
Annual reports: the Library does not collect annual reports.
Annual reports of the University and its Colleges and Departments are
retained in the Archives.
Dissertations: Only dissertations and theses written at Thomas
Jefferson University are acquired and kept indefinitely. Two copies
of doctoral dissertations are kept, a non-circulating copy in the Archives,
and a circulating copy in the open stacks. One copy of master's theses
is acquired and shelved in the Archives. Future TJU theses and dissertations
will be incorporated in the Jefferson Digital Commons. Library users
may obtain other dissertations directly from University Microfilms International
or through interlibrary loan.
Examination Question Books: Examination question books are selectively
acquired and kept in the Reserve collection.
Government Documents: the Library rarely purchases Government
documents, as a large number of health sciences related documents are
available, at no cost, on the Internet.
Loose-Leaf Publications: Acquisition of loose-leaf publications
is discouraged because of the high maintenance requirements, but they
are acquired on a case-by-case basis according to defined subject coverage
and demand.
Microforms: Microforms are acquired when the material is not
available otherwise (ex. Journal back files or replacements not available
online)
Proceedings of Congresses, Symposia: Proceedings of meetings
held within the current two years are acquired for subjects collected
at Level 2.
Reprints: Reprint purchases are discouraged in favor of completely
original material. Reprints of single journal issues are occasionally
purchased if the subject is in unusual demand. Reprints of monographs
are acquired only if the original is not owned, the subject is collected
at Level 2 and the contents have current value.
Technical Reports: Technical reports are acquired only when specifically
requested.
