National Statistics (Non-Health)

  • U. S. Census Bureau
    The authoritative source of information about U.S. populations, housing, income, geography and more. Census publications (at least partial) and data resources online include:
  • ChildStats.gov (Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics)
    This site contains national and state level statistics on children and their families. Health, economic, behavioral and social, and educational indicators are included, in addition to international comparisons.
  • Community Health Data Initiative (HHS)
    Several agencies of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, including the CDC and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, have published datasets for use by researchers and in mashups for public consumption.
  • Federal Assistance Award Data System (U.S. Census Bureau)
    A quarterly reporting system of financial assistance awards made by federal agencies, starting in 1996. State summary tables and detailed data files are provided.
  • FEDSTATS
    This is a searchable site that provides links to the 70 United States agencies that produce data which is available to the public. Data can be retrieved by agency, program, and alphabetically.
  • Kids Count Census Data Online (Annie E. Casey Foundation)
    Demographic statistical information pertaining to American youths includes national, regional, state, county, metropolitan, and congressional district data.
  • National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES)
    The NCES provides timely information on all aspects of education. This site features news, press releases, and recently released reports. It is searchable and requires the free Abode Acrobat reader for selected files.
  • USA Today Census 2000
    This site includes interactive state-by-state statistical profile maps and links to "USA Today" news stories related to 2000 U.S. Census data.

National Health Statistics

  • AgingStats.Gov (DHHS Administration on Aging)
    The "Web site of the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics," AgingStats.gov coordinates access to statistics resources about the aging population in the United States collected by a dozen federal agencies.
  • American Cancer Society Statistics
    General current statistics are available on the ACS Web site from 1997 to present. Statistics include site-specific, prevention, detection, and minority group cancer incidence. A limited number of statistics are in provided in Spanish. For more detailed statistics covering a longer span, use the ACS journal, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, whose annual January/February issue has compiled state-by-state cancer statistics since 1967 (free online from 1990 to present, SML 3rd floor print collection for older volumes).
  • American Hospital Directory: Search for a Hospital
    Free searchable database of individual U.S. hospital data. Included official American Hospital Association (AHA) bedsize and profile, along with the most current Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) statistics. Not all hospitals are listed in this database.
  • American Medical Association Statistics
    The AMA provides demographic data on physicians in the U.S., in addition to public health data. These statistics are found in various locations on the organization's Web site. Key areas include:
  • Centers for Disease Control Data & Statistics
    Lists surveillance programs, sources of data, and laboratory information for health statistics.
  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) (formerly Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA)
    Statistics and program information from the government agency responsible for the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
  • Conferences Related to Health Data (Expert Health Data Programming, Inc.)
    Upcoming conferences in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Data 2010: The Healthy People 2010 Database (CDC)
    A searchable database from data of the Healthy People 2010 report. Statistics are available from 1998 to present, and are searchable by state, population group, and Healthy People focus area.
  • Fertility of American Women (U.S. Census Bureau)
    Covers data from 1994 forward.
  • Directory of Health and Human Services Data
    A compilation of information about most major data collection systems sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Some data is available over the web,some requires the user to contact the appropriate agency or search the published journal literature. It is a very large collection good for browsing and locating studies containing usable data.
  • Health, United States (CDC)
    This large annual statistical report presents data on the nation's health, presented as a PDF file. Topics include including birth and death rates, infant mortality, life expectancy, health personnel and facilities, financing of health care, health insurance, managed care, and more. Includes urban and rural health chartbook, and trend tables for Excel or Lotus. PDF version downloadable in full or by section.
  • Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (AHRQ)
    HCUP is a family of health care databases and related software tools and products and developed through a Federal-State-Industry partnership and sponsored by AHRQ. Use HCUPnet for free, web-based custom table generation. Read HCUP Reports based on the data. Individual researchers can purchase their 6 databases after signing their data use agreement.
  • Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (AHRQ)
    MEPS is a set of large-scale surveys of families and individuals, their medical providers and employers. Summary data tables and publications are available by topic as well as raw data.
  • Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (CDC)
    Full text of MMWR publications with links to other health related sites.
  • Mortality Data from the National Vital Statistics System (National Center for Health Statistics)
    National level mortality statistics and links to additional resources containing such statistics.
  • National Center for Health Statistics (CDC)
    Publications, news releases, and fact sheets from NCHS, a part of the Centers for Disease Control. Includes public-use data files for download.
  • National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration)
    This site focuses on the current status of the healthcare workforce, including statistical analysis of employment trends and shortages.
  • National Death Index (CDC)
    The CDC provides an online index of death record information on file in state vital statistics offices. Statistical information is included.
  • National Vital Statistics System
    This resource includes vital statistics from 1950 to present, with a few resources going back as far as 1900. Areas of coverage include birth, morbidity and mortality, and family related data.
  • RenDer (U.S. Renal Data System)
    This database provides statistical information on end-stage renal disease in the U.S. It can provide data in a multi-axis format for population group, year, and disease. Free registration is required.
  • Report on Injuries in America (National Safety Council)
    Derived from Injury Facts, the Report is a brief synopsis of deaths and injuries occurring in the U.S.
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service
    SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies provides statistics on legal and illegal drug usage, drug related emergency department and medical examiner cases, and national substance abuse treatment.

State and Local Statistics

  • County Health Rankings
    A joint project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin, the site provides visual and tabular data from state health reports on a county-by-county basis, with comparative rankings, summary reports, and analysis of a variety of health factors.

For Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware

Pennsylvania

  • Pennsylvania Department of Health: Health Statistics (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania)
    Includes state-wide statistics on cancer incidence and mortality, vital statistics, health facilities, health status indicators, and behavioral risk data. Also includes some county health data. Much of the data is in PDF format.
  • Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PH4C)
    PH4C is an independent state agency that addresses health care costs quality, and access. Includes reports and interactive statistical databases on HMOs, coronary bypasses, county profiles, hip and knee replacements, and hospital performance.
  • Pennsylvania State Data Center (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania)
    This center provides statstical data for Pennsylvania primarily in the areas of population, housing, economics, and education.
  • Pennsylvania Youth Survey Report (PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency)
    Child and adolescent drug use and abuse statistics are gathered every two years in the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS).
County and Municipal New Jersey Delaware
  • Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research (University of Delaware)
    The CADSR provides opinion research and statistical analysis on health and other topics for Delaware.
  • Delaware Statistics: A Research Guide (University of Delaware Library)
    A guide to statistical resource for the state. Subject coverage includes general population data, economic indicators, crime statistics, health statistics, historical data, and weather data. Some links also provide county and municipal statistics.

International Statistics

  • Global Health Facts (KFF)
    Data by country on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other key health and socioeconomic indicators from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). Customizable and downloadable tables, charts and maps.
  • International Database (U.S. Census Bureau)
    This site includes several statistical databases for demographic and socioeconomic data for 227 countries.
  • Nation Master (Rapid Intelligence)
    Nation Master is an Australian company that gathers data from a variety of international sources in order to present an easy-to-use graphical comparison of countries in a number of topic areas. Users may browse prepared country rankings, or select from more than 600 statistical variables available to create customized charts. While most statistics come from international agencies or organizations, such as the U.S. Census Bureau, CIA World Factbook, WHO, OECD and UNESCO, other sources include various think tanks, advocacy organizations, commercial entities, and, in one case, an individual with subject expertise. Sources for all facts and figures are cited, which researchers will especially appreciate. Note that there are some inconsistencies in providing statistical definitions for all data, not all countries appear in all data results, and some links are broken.
  • World Health Organization Statistical Information System (WHOSIS)
    This is a searchable site of international health statistics.

Tutorials

  • Web Interface for Statistics Education: WISE (Claremont Colleges)
    WISE provides links to tutorials, statistics gateways, online journals, a glossary, and statistical applets. The tutorials cover a wide range of basic statistical concepts, including central limit theorem, hypothesis testing, t-test, and correlation and regression.
  • Statistical Tutorials (United Bristol Healthcare)
    This site contains tutorial articles on questionnaires in research, questionnaire data analysis, sample size calculations, two sample t-tests, 2x2 table analysis, and data entry tips.
  • Statistical Consultating Center: Links to Statistical Tutorials (Univ. of Massachusetts Amhurst)
    UMass-Amherst provides a subject gateway to a variety of statistical software tutorials covering the basics of statistics.
  • Statistical Software Tutorials (Univ. of Texas Austin)
    The tutorials available cover statistical software packages such as SPSS, SAS, AMOS, Mplus, HML, PRELIS, and LISREL.
  • SPSS Tutorials - Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (Furman Univ.)
    This 14-part tutorial covers the basics of SPSS software, and the computation and analysis of descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation, scatterplots, and different types of variance.
  • SPSS for Windows, Version 11.0: A Basic Tutorial (Social Sciences Research and Instructional Council)
    This is an eight-chapter online textbook that covers the usage of version 11 of the SPSS statistical software package.
