State and Local Resources for Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware

The Tri-State Area

  • Directory of Local Government Health Departments
    A tri-state area listing of state, county, and municipal departments of health and human services. These departments are the key resources for local public health information and issues. Listings include addresses, phone numbers, email contacts, and links to each agency’s Web page (if available).
  • Directory of Local Planning Commissions
    A tri-state area listing of regional, state, county, and municipal planning commissions/departments. Key data on a particular community may be found on each Web site. Planning commissions generally deal with local land and water management issues, in addition to community development projects. Such issues potentially impact community profiles and public health. Listings also include addresses, phone numbers, email contacts (if available), and links to each commission's Web page (if available).

Pennsylvania State-Wide Resources

  • Find a Local United Way Organization: Pennsylvania
    This is a listing of all United Way organizations in the state of Pennsylvania. Many of the local United Way sites also provide listings of community organizations affiliated with the United Way. These organizations may provide non-governmental public health services to the community.
  • Healthy People 2010 (PA Dept. of Health)
    The Pennsylvania-specific version of Healthy People 2010 is searchable down to the county and demographic population level.
  • Pennsylvania Community Providers Association (PCPA)
    This is a trade association of community providers of mental health, mental retardation, and substance abuse services operating in the state.
  • Pennsylvania Cooperative Extension and Outreach (Penn State Univ.)
    This organization provides outreach services relating to agriculture and how it affects communities throughout the state.
  • Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of Laboratories
    These are laboratories maintained by the state to provide testing for disease outbreaks and other public health threats. It also ensures compliance of state and federal laws for all laboratories in the state.
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Health Public Health Information Clearinghouse (PADOHPHIC)
    Limited copies of publications on health topics geared towards the public are freely available for order.
  • Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA)
    A state government agency that provides disaster management and support to county and local governments. Current news, weather, county emergency management contacts, local weather forecasts and advisories, along with homeland security threat levels, can be found on this site.
  • Pennsylvania Environmental Council
    This organization deals with environmental issues by working with the Pennsylvania state government. Their main focus is on land and water management along with legislator and public education projects.
  • Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4)
    The PCH4 is an independent state agency responsible for addressing the problem of escalating health cost and ensuring the quality of healthcare and increasing access for all citizens regardless of ability to pay. It offers county profiles for inpatient hospital discharge data, a number of helpful hospitals and health related public reports. Related links to a number of state/federal, healthcare associations, magazines/journals, Pennsylvania hospitals, universities/colleges are available as well as web sites having to do with healthcare and government.   • Pennsylvania Public Health Association
    As a state level affiliate of the American Public Health Association, this organization’s purpose is to promote sound public health practices within the state. Also included on the site is information about health conferences held within the state and careers in public health.
  • Report Cards (PA Dept. of Education) The PA Dept. of Education provides "report cards" for schools and districts to ensure compliance with No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The pre-NCLB "school profiles" are available in their archive. The quality of local schools has been shown to have a relationship to a community’s public health status.

Philadelphia

New Jersey State-Wide Resources

  • Find a Local United Way Organization: New Jersey
    This is a listing of all United Way organizations in the state of New Jersey. Many of the local United Way sites also provide listings of community organizations affiliated with the United Way. These organizations may provide non-governmental public health services to the community.
  • HealthyNJ: Health in New Jersey (UMDNJ)
    A gateway for health information resources at the state and county level. Areas of coverage include specific state health concerns, government agencies, county resources, health care facilities and providers, state and county level health statistics, health insurance, and professional health organizations and education.
  • Healthy New Jersey 2010 (NJ Depart. of Health and Senior Services)
    This is the New Jersey-specific version of Health People 2010, as prepared by the state's Department of Health and Senior Services.
  • New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Public Health and Environmental Laboratories
    These laboratory services maintained by the state to provide testing for disease outbreaks and other public health threats. It also ensures compliance of state and federal laws for all clinical laboratories in the state.
  • New Jersey School Report Card (NJ Dept. of Education)
    This resource is a report on 35 criteria for public schools in New Jersey, along with state and national comparisons. The quality of local schools has been shown to have a relationship to a community’s public health status.
  • New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM)
    This agency deals with and coordinates state and local disaster response and preparedness. It also is an educational resource for the public on emergency management issues.
  • New Jersey Public Health Association
    As a state level affiliate of the American Public Health Association, this organization’s purpose is to promote sound public health practices within the state. Also included on the site is information about health conferences held within the state, the associations newsletter, and links to free online articles about New jersey public health issues.
  • Rutgers (Univ.) Cooperative Extension
    This agency assists the population of New Jersey to agricultural and environmental management, food safety, nutrition education, and family and economic stability.

    This site links to government and community public health related resources for all 21 counties in New Jersey.

Delaware State-Wide Resources

  • Be Healthy Delaware
    Formerly Healthy Delaware 2010.
  • Delaware Consumer Health Information Service (Delaware Academy of Medicine and Delaware Division of Public Health)
    This service, administered by the Delaware Academy of Medicine, provides consumer health information to the public through their website and through Delaware public libraries. Delaware residents can ask health questions, consult a calendar of events, and find links to authoritative sources.
  • Delaware Cooperative Extension (University of Delaware)
    This organization provides services and education relating to agriculture management and community economic development issues of the state.
  • Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA)
    A state government agency that provides disaster management for the state and support to county and local governments. Information about emergency hazards, weather advisories, county emergency management contacts, and emergency plans are available on this site.
  • Delaware Public Health Laboratory, Division of Public Health, Delaware Health and Human Services
    This is the public health testing laboratory for all state agencies. It provides a full level of laboratory services. It also ensures state and federal compliance of all clinical laboratories in Delaware.
  • Delaware Public School Profiles (Delaware Dept. of Education)
    This site lists basic level school profiles, their missions and goals, and the state performance rating for all public schools in Delaware. The quality of local schools has been shown to have a relationship to a community’s public health status.
  • Delaware Public Health Association
    This affiliated state association of the American Public Health Association has no Web site of its own. This is the APHA contact listing for this organization.
  • United Way of Delaware
    As the Delaware's only United Way organization, it helps to provide funding and services through non-government member organizations for the needs of local communities. Many of the services provided are public health related.
