Initially designed for academic and government use, the Internet has been opened for use by private corporations and individuals. It contains many services useful for the health care professional like world-wide electronic mail, electronic news services, file search services, file transfer services , bulletin boards and many others. Universities, hospitals, libraries and patients have all become publishers of medical information on the Internet.

This has allowed the access to a great deal of information. Just like its counterparts around the world, the 100 years old Haydarpa a Numune Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey has taken steps to secure itself a sure seat in the world wide web with access to the information present as well as being itself an information provider. After the design of the world-wide web pages in HTML format at the hospital, negotiations have taken place with a commercial company to lease a 1 MB of space on their server under the finance of the Haydarpa a Numune Hospital Foundation.. Since March 1996, the pages have been on the net at the URL http://www.kilim.com.tr/numune. The pages bring all there is to know about the hospital that has been the initial learning grounds to many of the leading physicians of Turkey , the city and the country it is in, as well as ready access to various medical web sites around the world, abstracts of the Haydarpa a Medical Journal, and HNH-MedNet; an electronic medical journal. The pages are bilingual, English and Turkish, addressing the questions of any foreign visitors. It aims to bring medical as well as non-medical information from the hospital, the city of Istanbul, and the country of Turkey to anyone that may acquire for it.

Patients are already seeking advice, consultation, and referral over the Internet. To address this need the health professionals have to keep themselves update with what is going on to improve themselves according to the requests. The Haydarpa a Numune Hospital has also undertaken a task to inform its staff about Internet through series of courses and publications, such as Internet For Physicians', Onganer E, nar Y. ISBN Istanbul 1996.

The visitor number of the Haydarpa a Numune Hospital have shown a somewhat linear increase with comments coming from all around the country and the world. We would like to share our experiences in the design of our web site with the criticisms we got while discussing how health care professionals and others have increased their use of the Internet reflected by the linear increase of the number of visitors of our site.
