"The Internet: Distributed Access to Information"

Caroline Arms, BS
University of Pittsburgh

This workshop will use Macintoshes to demonstrate some commonly available distributed applications that allow users to access information over the Internet. It will emphasize the greater functionality of a direct Internet connection compared to a connection made through a host computer using terminal emulation software and introduce the standard layered model for computer networks and the concept of a network protocol. Among the applications available for hands-on use will be Gopher, WAIS, and MOSAIC. This workshop assumes that participants are comfortable using a Macintosh, and already use the Internet for electronic mail, file transfer (FTP), and logging on to remote interactive systems such as catalogs (Telnet).
