Motherhood, the Elephant in the Laboratory
As increasing numbers of women pursue research careers in the sciences, many who have children discover the challenges of balancing a professional life with the demands of motherhood. Although this issue affects the careers of women scientists, it is rarely discussed as a professional concern. Emily Monosson, an independent toxicologist, has assembled a group of 34 women scientists from overlapping generations and across disciplines to share their experiences.

On the new bookshelf this week: Health Economics 4th Edition by Charles E. Phelps. Dr. Phelps is Provost Emeritus Professor of Political Science and Economics at the University of Rochester. Highlights of the new edition include a focus on lifestyle choices and comparative studies designed to shed light on how other countries deal with health care issues.
