RSVP for 7/16 book discussion on two short Orwell essays

These two essays are quite engaging! Please RSVP to Joanne. Also, find us on Facebook or Pulse.

Dear Jefferson Readers:
Again, thank you for your interest in pursuing a book club. The initial kick-off meeting will be:

Thursday, July 16th
12:00 – 1:00
Room 200b Scott (behind the fish tank)

Feel free to bring your lunch

As a starting point we will be discussing 2 short essays by George Orwell for the first meeting. 1) Confessions of a Book Reviewer, and 2) How the Poor Die

Both of these can be downloaded from http://www.george-orwell.org . If you have trouble downloading them send me your interdepartmental address and I will snail mail them to you. If you would prefer to buy a book of these essays we have two recommendations both by George Packer of the New Yorker: 1) “Facing Unpleasant Facts: Narrative Essays” (Complete Works of George Orwell) and 2) “All Art is Propaganda: Critical Essays” By George Orwell, Keith Gessen, George Packer.

Come to the meeting to find out why these essays were chosen!

The goal of the book club is to build community with other Jeffersonians who enjoy reading and to exchange thoughts and ideas about the books that we select. At the first meeting we are planning to discuss and negotiate a proposed structure for the book club as well as what books will be chosen over the next year so please come with ideas!

The meetings will be every two months, July, September, November, January, March, May.

Please RSVP to me if you are planning on attending. We look forward to to seeing you on July 16th!

Sincerely,

Joanne, Gary, Kathy, Pat
