PsycINFO webinars from the APA

The American Psychological Association (APA) is holding 30-minute webinars on how to search PsycINFO effectively. They deliver the database on several platforms and are offering separate training for each. APA will cover OvidSP, which is what Jefferson uses, on December 3, 2008 at 2:00pm EST and February 18, 2009 at 1:00pm EST. Free registration is required.

Of course, Jefferson librarians are available to meet with you at your convenience for a personalized consultation.

EBSCOhost updates

EBSCOhost, Jefferson’s platform for CINAHL and SPORTDiscus, announced several minor changes in response to user feedback.

  • Direct link to the Basic Search Screen from both the Basic and Advanced Search Screens
  • Keyword renamed New Search
  • Result List mouse over text changed from Refine Search to Search Modes and Limiters
  • Entire phrase for cited references on Result List replaces the number of references in parentheses
  • Search mode specified on Result List green bar
  • Search History View Results anchor positioning improved
  • Additional Help link added to Choose Databases Screen
  • Coming soon: EBSCOhost Mobile will be a true wireless access interface for all EBSCOhost databases. What changes would you like to see?

    Write-n-Cite blocked from staff computers

    Write-n-Cite users have been running into problems when using computers on the campus MST network. The MS Word Status sticks at “Word is not Running” and clicking cite fails to send citation code to Word. We’re working with Jeff-IT to resolve the problem.

    One work around is to use the One Line/Cite View in RefWorks, which provides code snippits to copy-and-paste into Word and a bibliography button to format your document. Here are full instructions (Word).

    PubMed design changes

    The folks at the NLM have been making changes to make PubMed easier to use. Recent announcements include changes to the clipboard and related articles display and upcoming chages to the formatting of results.

    Mac Office X and Write-n-Cite

    Some Mac users report that the current version of Write-n-Cite for Mac, v2.5, isn’t inserting citations into the Office X version of Microsoft Word. (I’ve been able to replicate that problem and see that it does work on the newer Office 2008 for Mac, which is installed in the Scott LRC.) Reverting to the older Write-n-Cite for Mac v.2 fixes the problem, but the download is no longer available from the RefWorks download page. The very helpful folks at RefWorks Support provided the file and these instructions:
