My NCBI: Setting Up Your Search Filters

On February 1, 2005 PubMed released My NCBI. My NCBI allows researchers to add customizable search filters to their PubMed searches. Researchers can use filters to apply frequently used limits to all their searches. Common limits include: English language articles or full-text articles owned by Scott Memorial Library.

This month I'll show you how to select your filters and next month I'll show you how to set-up your email schedule for saved searches in PubMed.

First, access PubMed via JEFFLINE (http://jeffline.jefferson.edu) under Core Resources.

Sign-in or register for My NCBI.
Hint: Use your campus key or a username that you will remember easily.

Search filters can be customized to your searches. The following example shows the use of 3 filters after a search on diabetes: All citations, English citations and citations with full-text owned by the Scott Memorial Library (tjusmlib).

There are several filters that can be applied in My NCBI accounts. To select filters click on My NCBI under PubMed Services.

Select PubMed from the database options.

A menu of Commonly-Requested Filters is available:

To include the Scott Memorial Library filter, follow these steps:

  1. Click on Browse
  2. Click on Libraries under Linkout
  3. Click on Thomas Jefferson University Scott Memorial Library, Philadelphia, PA
  4. Click on selections at the top of the page: Add a result tab for all items that match this category and Add a link to any item that matches this category
  5. Select on My Selections to confirm that your selections were registered

Next month: Setting up email alerts for saved searches in PubMed.
