Jefferson's subscriptions to electronic books have increased to the point where it's cumbersome to read through an entire list. The obvious solution is a searchable database, and what better database to use than our own ThomCat catalog?
Select the Books link from the CyberCafé, and you'll now see the following search screen:
Search results display in ThomCat:
Click the Electronic access link on a bibliographic record to go directly to the e-book or the relevant e-collection (e.g., MD Consult).
All of the subscription e-books have been added to ThomCat, and Collection Management staff is busily adding free health-related titles this fall. All of the MD Consult texts, AccessLange handbooks, STAT!Ref nursing books, and more are included. Free resources such as the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy or the Graduate Medical Education Directory (aka the “Green Book”) are being added. When the dust has cleared, we will offer over 150 titles in health and life sciences fields.
Using the catalog to search for specific types of material has always been a bit cumbersome, requiring use of the advanced search screen. The staff of the Library Information Technology Services unit at Vanderbilt University's Heard Library developed this simple-to-use search technique and generously shared it with us. Hats off to VU's Jody Combs and Deede Wang for their gracious collegiality.
