Are you confused by the recent changes for doing a cited-reference search at Scott Library?
Now that our self-service subscription to Science Citation Index has ended, Scott Library provides CD-ROM access to SCI for the years 1986-2003. These disks are now available on Reserve at the Circulation Desk. Additionally, the Library is now providing the Social Sciences Citation Index on CD-ROM from 1998-2002, also located on Reserve. Both of these indexes can be searched on any of the computers in the 2nd Floor Reference Area of the Library.
If you have used our previous versions of the Science Citation Index CDs, you may notice that the search interface is now Windows-based. This makes it easier to save search strategies for moving year-to-year, and allows the use of the copy and paste function.
Another major change in the Science Citation Index CDs for the years 1998-2003, is that each year is now contained on two separate disks. A second CD drive is required in order to run the search effectively and the Library provides a USB CD-RW drive when the disks are checked out from the Reserve collection. Cited reference searching is incomplete unless the disks are running simultaneously. Additionally, abstracts are now available for these years via two-disk searching. The Reference Desk staff will help you set up the CD-RW drive and get you started with your search.
How do you search by cited reference for the years not covered by the CD-ROMs?
Printed copies of Science Citation Index for the year 1955-1985 are available in the Reference Area. For members of the Jefferson community access to the current years (2003- ), not covered by the CD-ROMs, is available through fee-based mediated searching. For details and charges see the Database Search Services page on JEFFLINE.
