It sounds corny, but our right to participate in the elections process is important to maintaining our freedoms as Americans.

In the past several years, there has been a decline in voter turnout, smaller attendance at political rallies, fewer people engaged in politics and a reduced involvement in civic organizations. How can we meet the challenge of strengthening and maintaining a vibrant democracy? An important first step is exercising your right to vote.

Because libraries are a cornerstone of our democracy, the American Library Association is sponsoring a program to encourage citizens to register to vote.

Things that you can do this election season:

    Complete your online voter registration.

    Obtain absentee ballot information.

Find out what precinct you live in and your polling location.

Get informed about electoral issues ranging from campaign finance reform to healthcare funding to national security.

    Learn about the electoral process.

Get the latest updates on candidates from president to local school board members and where they stand - in print and online.

Learn about local ballot measures and upcoming referenda.

Find out about your elected officials' voting records and how you can contact them.

Attend a debate or community forum on local, state and/or national issues.

Connect with national and local civic organizations like the League of Women Voters or Project Vote Smart and learn how you can volunteer or get more involved.
