In the last issue of Forum, we learned how to search for favorite e-journals in ThomCat, Scott Library's online catalog. But, did you know that you can also use ThomCat as an efficient access point for e-books?
As of this writing, there are 105 e-books available in ThomCat from a variety of electronic portals. Following are two suggested methods for finding e-books, depending on your information needs.
Searching for a specific e-book title
If you want to search for a specific e-book, simply type the title you are looking for into the main search screen. Bear in mind that for several titles, Scott Library retains parallel print and electronic holdings.
Your initial search results will list the variety of formats available for that title. Like e-journal entries, users must view the full ThomCat record to connect to the e-book.
When the full catalog record is retrieved, users may click the “Electronic access” field to connect to that resource.
Note: e-books from MD Consult require users to first connect to the host site with their Campus Key and password, and then select the title under the “Books” tab from the main MD Consult screen.
Browsing e-book titles
If you're not searching for a specific title and would prefer to browse all available e-books, the “Power Search” option is available from the main search screen.
From the Power Search screen, select the E-BOOK item type to limit results to items available electronically. Further sort features allow you to alphabetize results by title. Finally, click the “Search Catalog” button to initiate the search.
E-book titles will appear in alphabetical order, and display 20 items per page.
