Academic medical centers thrive when research, clinical and educational practitioners are committed to life-long learning. A key aspect is keeping in touch with developments in one’s field through current awareness services. Now JEFFLINE offers personal Ovid accounts for storing your own permanent and current awareness searches.
A current awareness search is a saved search strategy that automatically emails you with any new citations added to a database on your topic, as in the examples above. Previously, the Ovid current awareness feature (called AutoAlerts) had to be set up by Library Information Services staff. Now Jefferson faculty, staff, and students can request a personal account in which to maintain and update their own AutoAlerts. These accounts also allow storage of permanent searches, so that complicated searches can be saved for periodic use.
Current Awareness searches can increase your effectiveness by automatically keeping you up to date with developments in your field. Ovid offers excellent features as a current awareness resource. It contains a range of high-quality databases in areas of interest to our community with features that let you filter and format the results you see.
You can decide if you want to retrieve citations by:
- Publication – to review all the articles published in a particular set of journals [note you will receive a list of articles, not in table of contents form]
- Topic – Ovid offers advanced searching features to refine your results
- Author
In addition to searching features, Ovid also offers ways to limit your search for quality filtering. For example, health professionals may add to their topic the subset limit Systematic Reviews to find meta-analyses, reviews of clinical trials, evidence-based medicine, consensus development conferences, and guidelines. Or, you can limit just to those items available at Scott Library.
Ovid also gives you the option to receive an email with hypertext links back to the live database search. This allows you to choose those citations you want, and download them in alphabetical order by journal title for easy retrieval from the library. EndNote and Reference Manager users can use the Ovid Direct Export feature for easy additions to their databases.
The Library’s Information Services staff is looking forward to helping you choose the right search strategy and delivery methods for your needs. After you request a personal account, the staff will offer you a free consultation to review saving a current awareness search and creating a useful strategy.
To obtain an Ovid personal account:
- On the initial Welcome to Ovid page, choose the link to Request a Personal Account.
- Complete the form
Your account will be created in approximately 1 working day. You will continue to log in with your campus key but will see that you are able to save searches as either permanent or AutoAlert searches.
