BioMed Central launched a new pair of Open Access journals – BMC Medicine and BMC Biology – on 1 December. The journals compliment the 57 established specialist titles in the BMC journal series by providing a selective home for articles of broad interest within a large field or across fields.

BMC Biology publishes original research articles and methodology articles in any area of biology but with a focus on the biomedical sciences.

BMC Medicine publishes original research articles, technical advances and study protocols in any area of medical science or clinical practice.

Peter Newmark, BioMed Central’s Editorial Director said: “BMC Medicine and BMC Biology will fill the gap between the highly selective Journal of Biology and the existing BMC titles. The journals have been started in direct response to considerable demand from authors for more selective and broader interest Open Access journals.”
Both BMC Biology and BMC Medicine will use the same online submission system as other BioMed Central journals.
