Q: How can I prevent my computer and files from being damaged by a computer virus?
A: JEFFLINE itself is a safe resource, but it does link to the very insecure Internet. Take some basic precautions to protect yourself:
First, obtain virus protection software for your computer. Software should contain both virus-sensing and virus-elimination features. Virus protection software is available from Jeff-IT for campus computers, or from software stores for home computers.
Second, download files from the Internet (e.g. via FTP) very selectively. Email from unknown senders is particularly suspicious.
Third, regularly back up your computer files and keep all original software disks just in case your computer becomes infected. You may need to re-install programs.
Additional information on viruses can be found at the TJU Computer Virus Information page, or in the Jeff-IT Help Center.
