There are many benefits to online continuing medical education (CME).
Programs are plentiful and the costs can be low. More than 2000 hours of online CME programs are available without any charge, while another 16,000 hours are available ranging from $5 to $15 per hour.
In addition to reasonable cost, other advantages of online CME are:
- Access 24/7
- Self-paced instruction
- No travel expenses
With over 200 sites offering more than 10,000 activities and more than 19,000 credit hours available online, finding and evaluating the best sites for your CME needs can, however, be daunting.
Here are a few suggestions:
- Family doctors could start with the American Academy of Family Physicians or FamilyPractice.com
- Internal Medicine physicians could check out Clinical Problem Solving Cases sponsored by ACP/ASIM or Johns Hopkins Advanced Studies in Medicine.
- Cardiologists could go to CardioVillage (UVA)
- Medscape is another source for CME. The site offers 150 CME courses, with most offering 1.5 free credit hours and the ability to receive emails about CME courses that may interest you.
- Doctorsguide offers over 1000 CME courses.
- CEMedicus offers free CME credit for about 450 online CME activities created by 6 CME providers.
Finally, don’t forget to consult Jefferson’s Office of Continuing Medical Education, where a calendar of events, video archive, monographs, case studies, and more links are available.
