PELS Pitfalls

In October 2002 we introduced PDA sync stations for The Patient Encounter Log System (PELS), designed for tracking experiences during clinical clerkships. After several months of experience with the PELS stations, we offer the following advice to help you solve (or avoid) some common problems.

If you are not running the current version of PELS, you may not be able to upload your data.
If this is the case: contact either Richard Cowan (richard.cowan@jefferson.edu) or Michael Mei (mgm102@jefferson.edu). They will set up a specific time for you to upload your data. The server needs to be set so that it can accept the data in the old version. Another option is to back up your data, install the latest PELS software version (available via the link below, or at the Library's LRC), re-sync your information, then try the upload again.

You only have 13 days from the last day of your rotation to upload your data. If you try to upload the data on the 14th day, it will not work.
If it is past this date, contact either Richard Cowan (richard.cowan@jefferson.edu) or Michael Mei mgm102@jefferson.edu.

If your registration data in the student record system is incorrect, you may not be able to upload your data.
Always check your information in BannerWeb.

Make sure it is YOUR name on your PELS. If you pick someone else’s name by accident, you will be giving them credit for your patients.
Pick your name from the list of your fellow 3rd-year JMC students, but be careful here, because you’ll have to re-install the application if you pick the wrong name!

Always verify your data submission through your PULSE account or with this link: http://www.tju.edu/jmc/crmehc/PELS/

Warning: Sony CLIE users
Students have reported problems using the Sony CLIE series PDA devices. While these devices offer an attractive list of features, some students have had problems installing the PELS application, in addition to hardware and operating system failures that have resulted in the loss of all data on their CLIE (including PELS encounter data). If you are considering purchasing another device, please note that the most trouble-free manufacturers and models are the Palm m500 series and the Handspring Visor Platinum series.

To submit your PELS data for review, you must use one of the PELS sync stations that have been set up on the 4th floor of Scott Library:

  • Study Carrel #140 has a Palm Cradle – PCSE 669 (for Palm 500 and 505 series)
  • Study Carrel #141 has a Palm Cradle – PCSE 674 (for Palm 500 and 505 series)
  • Study Carrel #142 has a Sony Cradle – PCSE 672 (for Sony Clie PEG-SL, PEG-SJ20, PEG-SJ20 CLIÉ, PEG-SL10 series)
  • Study Carrel #143 has a HANDSPRING VISOR CRADLE – PCSE 666 (for all the Visor models)
