Looking For Community and
Public Health Information?

At the Reference Desk, we are often asked to help find health-related information for a particular neighborhood, county, or state. Also, because of Jefferson's new Master of Science in Public Health program, we are starting to get more questions specific to the field of public health. Since most of the available information is scattered all over the Internet, our patrons just don't know where to start. This is the reason for the creation of one of JEFFLINE's newest resources, JEFFSelects: Community & Public Health. It is a list of abstracted Internet links, specific to these subject areas, selected and described by a professional librarian from the Scott Memorial Library.

The new module replaces the previous JEFFSelects: Community Health module, which needed a major overhaul in light of our increasing demand for public health information. Since much of the information related to both of these disciplines comes from the same sources, one combined module was developed. This resource is intended as a starting point for research in community and public health beyond the scope of Scott Library's print collection.

This JEFFSelects module provides community and public health information at the state, national, and international levels, and also focuses on the regions of southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware. The module is arranged as follows:

  • How to Use This Resource - A guide on how to get started and utilize resources for community and public health research.
  • U.S. Government Resources - Community and public health resources from various federal government agencies.
  • State and Local Resources - State or local community and public health related agencies and organizations in the tri-state area.
  • U.S. Organizations - Non-government, U.S.-based organizations related to the practice of community and public health.
  • International Organizations - Organizations focusing on public health issues at either a continental, or global level.
  • Major Subject Gateways - Other resources, similar to this module, created by libraries and organizations outside of the Jefferson community.
  • Community Locator Tools - Resources to help one define a desired communityÕs boundaries.
  • Public Health Assessment Tools - A combination of mapping assessment tools and public health assessment instruments.
  • Related Resources - A list of additional JEFFLINE resources useful to research in this area.

The most unique features of this JEFFSelects module are the online directories of state and local health departments, and of state, regional, and local planning commissions. These directories focus on a sixteen-county area of southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware. Included are addresses, phone numbers, and--where available--e-mail addresses and website links. The directories have been created and are maintained by professional librarians at Scott Library.

When you need to do community or public health related research, you may want to consider starting with the JEFFSelects: Community & Public Health module. It is designed to assist you with your research, while reducing the time you spend searching for information on the Internet. If you have any suggestions for improvements or additions to this module, please feel free to contact the Information Services Department of the Scott Memorial Library. Contact information can be found in the Related Resources listed below.
