Caution -- Merging Technologies Ahead

Do you use a chalkboard, white board, or flip chart often? Wish you could, but teach in too large a classroom for students to see what you draw? AISR has found a solution for you -- Mimio!

The Mimio is a handy little device that can be used to capture notes during brainstorming sessions. It captures whatever you draw on a flip chart or white board and stores it as a graphic file on your computer. The files can then be printed or emailed, so everyone who participated can have a copy.

The real benefit for classroom teaching at Jefferson is the Mimio's ability to send the information it's receiving to a video projector. So, if you're comfortable drawing on a flip chart but worried that students in the back row can't see what you're drawing, this is the solution for you.

The Mimio is very simple to use, connects to a computer via a USB cable, and has two working components--a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitters are devices that hold a normal color marker for flip charts or a normal white board marker. You can draw in different colors since the marker holders have color-coded caps on them and the image is captured in the same color. The receiver clips to the flip chart, or attaches to the white board by suction cups.

AISR will install Mimio software on computer podiums in the Solis-Cohen and Brent auditoriums. To use the system in those locations, you need to inform Medical Media Services so they can set up the flip chart or white board for you. If you will be meeting in another room, Medical Media Services can help with that setup as well, and there is no additional charge if you are already renting one of their laptops or projectors. If you have your own equipment, the LRC can install the software on your laptop, and you can check out the Mimio system from them.

If you have any questions about Mimio, feel free to contact me. Or, if there are other technology resources you would like to have available, please let me know. We're here to help!
