About NCBI: One-Stop Shopping for
Molecular Biology Resources

Recent developments in molecular biology promise to transform our understanding of the disease process and our approach to diagnosis, drug development, and drug delivery.

A new website from the National Library of Medicine's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is designed to help those in the research and medical communities navigate the growing wealth of information resources in this field.

Unfortunately, it's deceptively simple title, About NCBI, doesn't hint at the richness of the content presented within this website. In addition to providing an introduction and access to NCBI's databases and programs, the site offers something for everyone from novice to expert.

Some highlights:

  • A Science Primer - a series of lucid documents introducing and explaining the science behind genome mapping, molecular modeling, microarray technology, pharmacogenetics, and other relevant topics.

  • Outreach and Education - links to NLM and NCBI tutorials and glossaries. Also includes Coffee Break, a resource that "combines reports on recent biomedical discoveries with use of NCBI tools into an interactive tutorial that tells a biological story".

  • Human Genome Resources - integrates access to background information, databases, ftp sites, news and other information related to the Human Genome Project.

Judging from the response to the program "A Field Guide to NCBI Molecular Biology Resources" presented here last November, there should be a wide audience for this site at TJU.
