"Success and Failure in the Merging of Six of the Nation's Leading Teaching Hospitals"
John A. Kastor, MD
Professor of Medicine
University of Maryland School of Medicine
Dr. John A. Kastor, a cardiologist, professor of Medicine, and former Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, will present the 10th Annual Paul C. Brucker, MD Lecture in Healthcare.
Dr. Kastor's talk is entitled "Success and Failure in the Merging of Six of the Nation's Leading Teaching Hospitals". Dr. Kastor will discuss three instances of teaching hospital mergers in response to the dramatic changes in health care during the 1990s: Presbyterian and New York Hospitals in New York, the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and Stanford and the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Kastor, who recently published a book on this subject, undertook an intensive case study of these hospital mergers, extensively researching the process, and interviewing the individuals involved. The resulting analysis details the strengths and weaknesses of these mergers, and important lessons that were learned.
