PDA Rx: Mobile MICROMEDEX

For those of you with JEFFLINE access and a PDA, MICROMEDEX has a new database for you. You can now access a PDA version of MICROMEDEX, with a simple PC download and HotSync. This database is updated on a quarterly basis, so the information is reasonably up-to-date.

Mobile MICROMEDEX is not a full version of the MICROMEDEX database, available through JEFFLINE. It is intended to be a basic version that you can use for quick reference in a patient care setting. This searchable database provides access to information via drug name, clinical conditions, toxicology information, and alternative medicine information. The alternative medicine information is a bonus not available through the JEFFLINE MICROMEDEX version.

Mobile MICROMEDEX runs on the Palm OS 3.0 or 3.5 operating systems, and requires 4.5 MB of free PDA memory. Also required is a PC running Windows 95 though 2000 or NT 4.0, in order to download and install the program. We have yet to test a download onto a PC running either version of Windows XP, but we're sure that it will be able work with XP sometime in the near future.

Mobile MICROMEDEX is not the only free PDA drug database. There are two other major ones, the very popular ePocrates and the Tarascon Pharmacopeia, available from Medscape. Each database provides basic drug information through its own unique interface. Much of the information is similar, with each database providing some unique information. The JEFFLINE Forum will be providing overviews of ePocrates and the Tarascon Pharmacopeia in upcoming issues.
