AgeLine

As the baby boom generation grays and faces retirement there is a good source for information that concentrates specifically on this segment of the population.

Ageline is a FREE online database offering summaries of books, articles, and videos on a variety of topics relating to life after 50. The references come from the gerontology collection of AARP's Research Information Center and the selected articles come from over 300 magazines and journals. The database is updated regularly and includes materials from 1978 to the present, with selected coverage from 1966-1977.

Ageline provides over 60,000 abstracts and content summaries, which are created to address the needs of four major audiences:

  • Researchers
  • General Public and Consumers
  • Professionals and Providers
  • Policymakers

Each reference includes a 100 to 200 word original abstract of the book or article. Each abstract is indexed using approximately 10 descriptors (keywords) that are assigned to reflect the major subjects covered. The descriptors are taken from the Thesaurus of Aging Terminology, which is produced by the Ageline staff.

Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT are available.

Since every record in Ageline deals with aging-related issues, it is not necessary to use terms such as Aged, Seniors, Elderly, or Geriatric in the search statement.

The database offers comprehensive summaries, but not the full-text. Check THOMCAT to search the Scott Memorial Library collection for full-text access.
