The National Library of Medicine has published a supplement to their recommended formats for bibliographic citation publication. The supplement addresses Internet formats and gives description and examples of how to cite databases, homepages, electronic mail and discussion lists. The supplement is based on guidelines provided by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and the International Standards Organization (ISO).

It contains citation formats for 12 categories of published materials: journals, books, conference publications, technical reports, dissertations and theses, bibliographies, patents, newspapers articles, maps, legal materials, audiovisuals and electronic formats such as online and CD-ROM.
