The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has released two new extensions: .BIZ and .INFO. .BIZ is the first web address built exclusively for businesses of all sizes all around the world, while .INFO domains are available for all uses. .INFO provides an opportunity to reach a worldwide audience with information about individuals, products, and ideas. The introduction of these two extensions will open new space for Web development. ICANN is also in the process of introducing the following extensions: .NAME, .PRO, .AERO, .COOP, and .MUSEUM.
All new extensions are considered only top-level, which means they are for the public use by the official overseers of the Internet.
The additions of the extensions will create more options to choose from in creating a web presence. A drawback to the expansion is the trouble that certain online entities will have in order to protect their brand names. Gartner, Inc. a consultancy group in Stamford Connecticut, predicts the average Global 2000 company will have at least 300 name variations registered by this year. Companies will have to decide which domain names are worth fighting for and which are not.
