BioMed Central is an independent publishing house that provides immediate free access to peer-reviewed biomedical research. Print peer-reviewed journals are limited to what they can publish because of a lack of space, but with the Internet publishing space is not an issue. If the science is good, then BioMed will publish. The submissions are peer-reviewed by two experts and BioMed publishes in more than 50 on-line journals covering biology and medicine. Some of the journals include: Arthritis Research, Breast Cancer Research, Critical Care, Genome Biology and Respiratory Research.
BioMed Central is an alternative publishing model that Jefferson supports. In addition to accessing the journals via the BioMed Central web site, the journals are also accessible through the Cyber Café. In the Cyber Café the BioMed Central journals are easily identifiable (BMC Biochemistry). As more journals become available they will appear in the Cyber Café. BioMed Central is a new publishing model and with this new model come caveats. In some cases, the most recent issue of a given title will not be available. Moreover, there may be gaps in coverage. Nevertheless, this is a free resource for full-text journal articles.
Free registration to the site grants users the ability to submit manuscripts for publication, save searches, receive email updates and customize the homepage.
BMC biological and medical news can also be downloaded to PDAs using Avantgo.
