The End of Internet Grateful Med
All access to Internet Grateful Med (IGM) was terminated at 5:00 PM Friday, September 28, 2001. Since 1996, IGM had provided a user-friendly, Web-based interface to National Library of Medicine's information resources. The specialized databases that were available via IGM, such as AIDSLINE and DIRLINE, are currently available at the National Library of Medicine Gateway. The new NLM Gateway interface provides "one-stop searching" for many databases and resources.

The target audience for the Gateway is the Internet user who is new to NLM's online resources and does not know what information is available or understands how to search the system. The Gateway offers a search engine where users can find terms, their definitions, and related terms, using NLM's MeSH and UMLS Metathesaurus. This is similar to the MeSH browser in PubMed and the mapping feature in OVID.

Other NLM systems (e.g., PubMed, LOCATORplus, MEDLINEplus) have retained their own search interfaces and will continue to be publicly available.
