The Learning Resources Center has more than just Microsoft Office and Internet browsing. This month I've chosen 3 software titles currently in the LRC that I feel would be used more if they were more widely known by members of the Jefferson community. I refer to these titles as hidden treasures. All 3 of these titles are available in both the LRC classroom and computer lab.
Bones of the Skull
A former colleague of mine who now is the Head of Information Commons at the University of Iowa played an main role in designing this program which covers the anatomy of the human skull in great detail. BotS, as I like to call this program, incorporates various self-assessment tools on the structure of the skull and it's a learning tool that can be used by anyone. One of the features that I really like is its use of Quicktime VR, which allows you to rotate an image a full 360°. I think this is really cool! As Neuroanatomy approaches in the JMC curriculum, students are beginning to discover this software so I don't think it will be a hidden treasure for too much longer.
Essentials of Psychopharmacology
This program bills itself as offering an explanation of the concepts of neurobiology, in addition to highlighting the principles of chemical neurotransmission. In a nutshell, it's better living through modern chemistry. I took a brief look at the program and was intrigued by the animations and colorful graphics that it used. As a bonus, the author will read the lessons to you for those of us who prefer to learn aurally.
Secrets Heart & Lung Sounds Workshop
This program is a collection of auscultation audio tracks, which plays a series of heart and lung sounds. It opens in a CD Player window and as you can see by the track list above it is divided between narration by the author with the sounds and the sounds by themselves.
Well, that's it for this month. Feel free to write me at kevin.k.johnson@mail.tju.edu and tell me what you think of this article. I may decide to do another one of these in the near future. Take care.
