This month's Forum software tips concentrates on Image scanning.

demonstrates use of the scanner.

The Learning Resources Center (LRC) has 1 scanner workstation with 2 modes of scanning that are available on it: Image and Text. Here are the first steps to begin scanning a document or object as an image:
- Open Adobe Photoshop and Select Import from the File menu.
- Choose Twain_32 (not Select Twain_32 source).
VistaScan32 (Photoshop's scanning module) will open with the last image that was scanned.
- Place the picture that you want to scan in the scanner and select Preview.
- After it is done previewing the image, draw the box around the area that you want it to scan, and then click on the scan button.
The scanned image will appear in a new window behind the VistaScan32 box. You must exit out of the VistaScan32 window to do anything to your image (including save).
Helpful tips:
Delete areas of the image that you do not want by narrowing the box in Preview or by cropping it in Photoshop. Image files are larger than you probably imagine and it will be advantageous for you to get it to the smallest size possible. Remember, even empty white space reflects size.
Photoshop is a very complex and powerful program and it's easy to make changes to the image and not be able to undo them. Normal saving conventions apply here. Save the file immediately after you've scanned it. Save the images as either .jpg (photo) or .gif (line art). If Photoshop does not allow you to save as anything other than a .psd (photoshop) file, save it as that and then try saving it as a copy.
The dpi (dots per inch) and percentage windows are a little misleading in VistaScan. You might think that if the percentage window says 100% you're going to get an image that's the same size as the original, but that's not the case. The dpi window sets the size and it's based on 100 dpi being 100 percent. This means that if you set it for 600 dpi you'll get an image that is 6 times as large as the original.
The LRC staff is always available to assist our users. Generally, once we show new users how to use our scanner the first time, they don't require too much additional assistance. I hope the tips that I have provided will increase your scanning skills.
I highly recommend that you sign-up for the scanner in advance, in the LRC because it can get very popular.
