What's the difference between the laser and dot-matrix printer?
Plenty, especially if you're using a Macintosh! This month I thought I'd provide a tip that is platform specific.
Frequently we have students who set their documents to go to a dot-matrix printer, and then change it to go to the laser printer. The problem lies in the fact that the Mac screen fonts don't take the same increments of space for the different printers and sometimes the difference can be huge. Take a look at the 2 examples below;

The image on the left is formatted to go to a dot-matrix printer and the image on the right is set to go to a laser printer. Notice how 3 lines appear shorter on the 2nd image and the text "King Jr." drops to a new line. This may not appear to be awe-inspiring, but when you're talking about a resume the importance is magnified.
Whenever you switch your type of printer on a Macintosh, you get the following message;
View this as a reminder to look at your document again for any changes to the alignment. Many times we see students who change the printer and forget to look at their document again. This can cause frustration, especially if you are in a hurry.
