Celebrated variously as a "physician to presidents," the "Father of American Physiology," and the first full-time clinical teacher to be employed by an American university medical school, this man was the personal physician of Thomas Jefferson. Born in England and educated in France, Scotland and Bavaria, he won Jefferson's trust by being scientifically minded and highly learned. He was not in a hurry to apply common treatments of the day, such as bloodletting. First appointed at Jefferson as Chair of the Institutes of Medicine and Medical Jurisprudence, he went on to become Dean, and to spend over 3 decades at Jefferson. He is credited with founding the Jefferson Medical College Department of Physiology, and set the standard in the field with his textbook "Human Physiology." Who is he?
