New Dell PCs for the
Learning Resources Center
Keeping up with fast moving technology is expensive. We are fortunate that the Scott Library endowment has allowed AISR to add new computers and update old ones every year. Office of Academic Computing staff have just rolled out 6 new Dell Optiplex GX110 computers. You can find them in the Scott Library Learning Resources Center, Room 306 (LRC Lab).

Though we usually end up spending the same amount per workstation each year, the capabilities have really improved. Look at the specs for the new GX110s:

  • new low-profile chassis
  • 500 MHz Pentium III CPU
  • 128 MB RAM
  • 24X CD-ROM
  • 6.4 GB Hard Drive
  • 17" Monitor (sorry, no flat panel displays yet)
These new Dells displaced 5 HP Pentium computers that were moved to the 4th floor of the Library, which in turn displaced 5 PowerMac 6100s. AISR is responding to student requests for faster machines on the 4th floor. We hope to have more PC's in place soon.

New Pentium Computer Stand-Up Workstation
It took a long time to pull that cable, but we finally got another data jack installed under the escalator on the first floor of Jefferson Alumni Hall. The existing stand-up workstation has turned out to be a popular place for students and faculty to quickly check their email -- in fact, there are often a couple of students waiting in line. The 2nd Pentium PC will help fill the need for that quick email fix.
